Overview

For people who are looking for an amazing and reliable Maine lobster dining experience from a family owned lobster company with a commitment to local communities and sustainable harvesting, take a look at Sanders Lobster Co. It was Jim’s father Earle that started the company. In 1952, Jimmy Haigh drowned at sea on a lobster run. Earle Sanders was working as a delivery truck driver for the company at the time and stayed on to help Eleanor, the widow, keep the company afloat. Out of the remnants of this tragedy, today Sanders Lobster Co handles more than a million pounds of lobster each year.

Shipping

Sanders Lobster Co uses FedEx Next Day Air to ship their live lobster throughout the continental U.S., but not to Hawaii, Alaska, or U.S. territories. Deliveries typically arrive by 3pm the following day, but can be later if you live in a rural area. Deliveries can be scheduled for any day between Tuesday through Friday, except for major holidays. Likewise, deliveries around the holiday season may be as late as 8pm. You must place your order by 8am Eastern Time to get your lobster delivered the following day.

The shipping costs are included in the total price of your lobster order. An order of 4 lobsters between 1.25 and 1.5 pounds will cost about $130. To give you a sense of the shipping costs, the price for 2 lobsters was still $98 last time we checked. Like any lobster company, inclement weather can sometimes delay lobster shipments.

Harvesting Methods

For more than a half a century, this company has worked with a handful of family lobstermen from the wharves in Cundy’s Harbor. If you want seafood with a story and traceable origins, you can go right to the spot and talk to the lobstermen and women who trap your lobster. For those who are looking to host an intimate dinner or special event, know that you’ll be receiving delicious and fresh-caught lobster sourced through sustainable harvesting methods.

In 2011, the company joined a partnership with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) and embarked on a program that tracks the origin of all the lobster in the program. The company carries the GMRI seafood verification to display our commitment to this effort as well as the company’s broader commitment to responsible harvesting practices.
