The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is a governmental body that helps to protect, maintain, and improve the fish, game, and aquatic plant resources in the State of Alaska. They manage use and development to benefit the state economy, as well as the well-being of the state’s residents and fauna. The Department manages around 750 active fisheries and works cooperatively with several universities and nongovernmental organizations to support local research and conduct baseline environmental monitoring of native species.

Alaska Department of Fish and Game Mission

This Department’s mission is to protect Alaska’s waters through providing licensure to fishers within the state. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game also helps regulate seasonal harvests for the various fish species caught in the state’s waters. Any person who wants to fish in Alaska, whether for commercial or personal purposes, must receive a license from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. In this way, the Department controls the amount of fishing that can occur.

The Department also works to educate both residents and visitors about the wildlife native to Alaska’s shores, providing resources to educators, hunters, and anglers, as well as sponsoring camps and skills clinics to help the next generation of sustainable fishers.

The ADFG’s Work

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is responsible for assessing and administering licenses and permits in the state of Alaska. The Department evaluates species health and determines the number of registrations permitted each year. Those interested in fishing in Alaska can secure these permits through the Department’s online store.

This state organization also helps to regulate commercial fishery operations within the state, announcing press releases for season start and end dates, yearly forecasts, and registration updates for fisheries. Importantly, the ADFG also helps to control the salmon harvest. They provide information about salmon species, commercial salmon boat types, and yearly overviews for revenue and average harvests.
