Which Lobster Size To Order

You have a few size options for live lobster delivery. You will usually choose from: 1.25 lb, 1.5 lb, 2 lb, and 3+ lb lobsters.

  • 1.25 lb lobsters (4-5 oz of meat): Sometimes called “quarters,” this is one of the smallest lobster sizes available. 1.5 lb lobster is the perfect size if you are also serving sides and dessert, as it will round out a full meal nicely.
  • 1.5 lb lobsters (5-6 oz of meat): These “halves” are a sweet spot. About 6 oz of meat is a big enough portion for an entrée, but you’ll still have room for sides.
  • 2 lb lobsters (6.5-8 oz of meat): Now this is a hearty serving. The 2 lb lobster can stand alone as a meal, and it’s not quite as difficult to prepare as larger lobsters. Tender meat and a delicious flavor make the 2 lb lobster a winner for special occasions.
  • 3+ lb lobsters (8+ oz of meat depending on the size of the lobster): are an impressive treat. Any lobster 4 lb or more is considered a jumbo lobster. Larger lobsters are more difficult to cook properly, but their meat can be just as tender and sweet as smaller lobsters.

A hard-shell live lobster will yield about 20-25% of its total weight in cooked meat. The recommended serving size for seafood and other types of protein is 4 oz. However, a normal serving size for a full lobster meal is usually 6 oz.

The Lobster Shipping and Delivery Process

This quick 4-step process is specifically made for people who are hoping to order seafood online. In this case, we’ve tailored it for your upcoming live lobster delivery.

  1. Pick Your Seafood: Depending on the site’s inventory, you can usually choose from live lobster, lobster meat, or lobster tails. Some companies offer a variety pack that includes different types of lobster cuts.
  2. Pick Amount of Seafood: Based on the number of people you’re feeding, you need to figure out how many lobsters you’ll need and which size lobster works for the occasion. You can make several delicious dishes with leftover lobster if you over-order, but try your best to avoid under-ordering.
  3. Schedule the Delivery: Seafood companies use overnight live lobster delivery to make sure your lobster arrives safely alive. You can order for next-day delivery depending on the company’s cut-off time, or schedule an order days, weeks, or months in advance.
  4. Unbox and Cook: The company will pack lobsters into a Styrofoam cooler, with a cooling agent, like ice or gel packs. If you won’t be home to receive a live lobster delivery, we recommend posting a note indicating where the delivery person should drop the package – preferably in a shaded area, like under an awning or inside the garage. Store the lobster in the refrigerator in some moist newspaper until you’re ready to cook. Get ready to prepare the lobster with our cooking and cleanup tips.
