A Timeline for How to Buy Live Lobster Online
Buying live lobster online is a pretty quick experience – from the time you place your order to the time the lobster appears on your doorstep, the whole process takes only a day or two. Below, we’ve outlined a timeline for how you should expect your lobster buying experience to go.
8:30a.m. – Figure out your lobster size and how many you want to buy. Most providers sell crustaceans that weigh between 1.25lbs and 5-6lbs. If you’re buying for a crowd of people who eat different quantities, you can almost always mix and match sizes.
9:30a.m. – Order your lobster. If you want your shipment delivered the next day, you’ll need to order sometime in the morning or early afternoon. This allows the company to process the order, get it to the shipping facility, and let the shippers work their magic. Each lobster provider has their own cut-off time, though, so be sure to check ahead.
11:30a.m. – If you select next-day shipping when you buy live lobster online, your order will begin processing almost as soon as you hit the “submit” button. A worker at your selected provider will pack your desired number of lobsters into a Styrofoam box with ice and gel packs, then seal it up safely.
3:00p.m. – Depending on the size of your provider, they will then either drop off your purchase at a shipping facility or have a shipping partner retrieve the day’s shipments from the production space.
5p.m. – The lobster departs the local shipping facility either by ground or air, depending on how far it needs to travel.
5:30a.m. – The next day, your lobster will arrive at a local shipping facility for processing. There, it will transition from the overnight shipping facilitators into the hands of the “final mile” providers – delivery and mail people.
9a.m. – Write a note to your delivery person and stick it on the door before leaving for the day. If you don’t plan to be home when the lobster arrives, indicate where the delivery person should drop the package. A shaded space is ideal.
9:30a.m. – Your live lobster shipment goes out for delivery in a local USPS, FedEx, or UPS truck.
2p.m. – Your lobster is delivered to your front door. Bring it inside, check to make sure the lobsters are alive, and store them in a safe, cool area.
6p.m. – Cook the lobster and enjoy your dinner!
